A new and more compact slipform paver is being introduced by Guntert & Zimmerman, widening the firm’s range of models. The company has been known in the past for its large slipform pavers used in road and airport runway jobs but in recent years has developed smaller and more compact units. The S400 shares many of its features with the existing S600, which was previously the most compact model in the line-up. The firm’s German representative, Peter Hedke said, “It’s the smallest machine we’ve ever built.”

Contractor Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald has used Klaruw’s advanced longitudinal grooving system, GrooveTex, to retexture sections of concrete surface on the M20 in the UK. The GrooveTex system improves and restores surface skid resistance by creating micro longitudinal grooves using closely spaced diamond-tipped saw blades at a predetermined width and depth. The machine worked together with a Wirtgen ISF25i (independent side feeder) in order to pave a concrete slab under difficult conditions. Precision paving performance has been achieved on a major road project in Germany, using Wirtgen slipform pavers. The SP1500 and SP1500L models have been used to help upgrade a stretch of the BAB A9 Autobahn in Thuringia. The BAB A9 Autobahn is one of Germany’s most important roads, connecting the German cities of Berlin and Munich over a total distance of 529km. The route runs from Brandenburg through Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Thuringia and into Bavaria.

This advanced Surface Friction System can capture real-time data on road surfaces for winter roads maintenance and warnings for drivers.
