In Romania the road authorities have signed a deal for the construction of a 22km stretch of highway in a contract worth €91 million. The Portuguese contractor Monte Adriano will construct the section linking Nadlac with Pecica. Romania has pledged to improve and expand its highway network with the construction of new links, and much of the funding for its highway plans has been provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

A notable partnership deal looks set to provide funding for key Russian highway projects. A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between the state-owned Russian Highways (Avtodor) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In Bosnia, delays have affected the construction work on the country’s key Corridor 5c highway project. So far 37km of the 336km Corridor 5c highway has been built, with 21km under construction and a further 43km section being cleared for work to commence. The long tale of woe concerning Poland’s troubled A2 highway project looks set to continue with the latest developments in the case. The Chinese contractor China Overseas Engineering Group Co (Covec) is appealing against a decision made by the Polish national road authority GDDKiA. The Polish authorities cancelled the contract that COVEC had previously been awarded to build a section of the A2 highway between Warsaw and Lodz.

Interest is strong in a major road contract in the autonomous Republika Srpska region of Bosnia. So far three Croatian companies, Ingra Inzinjering, Viadukt and Konstruktor have submitted bids for construction of the new highway that is planned and which will be 37km long. Serbia has managed to reduce the cost of building the Corridor 10 highway by €80 million. These funds will instead be used to pay for upgrades and improvements needed for the second section of the highway project, close to Neradovci. So far some 180km of the Corridor 10 highway has been built over a 40 month time frame. A further 150km of the highway has still to be built. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting the modernisation of the urban roads system in the Macedonian capital Skopje, with a ?5.6 million loan to introduce a modern traffic management system and upgrade one of the key arteries in the city.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) intends to provide a US$277 million (€200 million) loan to the Northern Capital Highway consortium, which will build the central 11.5km section of St Petersburg’s Western High Speed Diameter (WHSD) route. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a US$198million (€150million) sovereign-guaranteed loan for the construction of part of the new Banja Luka-Doboj motorway in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The loan-targeted motorway section is the main east-west link in Republika Srpska, one of the country’s entities. Magistral Severnoy Stolitsy (MSS) consortium must invest at least ROUBLE82.86billion (US$2.61billion) in the 11.5km stretch of mostly eight-lane motorway.
