Northern Ireland’s Department for Infrastructure has awarded Siemens UK a long-term traffic signal equipment management deal across more than 1,200 sites. It includes 950 Safer Routes to School signs, as well as a network of ANPR cameras and other Vehicle Activated Signs and rising bollards. Siemens said that the four-year deal is one of the largest of its kind that it has won as the main contractor. The principal objectives of the contract are to maintain a high level of equipment availability.

Turkey’s new Osman Gazi Bridge has now opened for traffic. This bridge can carry 40,000 vehicles/day, while halving the travel time needed using previous routes. This is a six lane suspension bridge measuring 3km and spanning the Sea of Marmara. Construction has taken 42 months and the structure has been designed to cope with the risk of earthquakes. An experimental 2km test track for electric heavy goods trucks will open in the Swedish area of Elväg Gävle in June. The track runs along the E16 highway between Sandviken and Kungsgården. Engineering firm Siemens is part of the team constructing an electric road project in the Swedish town of Gävle. A section of the E16 road outside of Gävle is being fitted with overhead electrical wiring, which will be used to power trucks. Siemens has developed a new cycle detection system that can trigger signalling and be used to monitor user numbers. The novel WiMag Cycle Detection package uses in-ground, low-power, wireless detectors and microwave radar technology to identify and count bicycles of all types, including those made of carbon fibre. The solution complements the company’s existing WiMag, loop and radar detection solutions.
