Norway is pushing ahead with a comprehensive plan of road development. The country’s state-owned contractor, Nye Veier, plans to commence work on a series of road projects during 2019. In all these projects will be worth more than €2.3 billion (NOK 22 billion). The plans call for 52km of highways to be constructed, with the Tvedestrand to Arendal link being the first to be buit.

A series of major road contracts have been awarded in Paraguay, although delays are being seen on one key link. The country’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) gave its approval for a series of road contracts to be awarded. These four packages are worth over US$136 million and are for18 different sections.

Work to improve a major highway connection in Paraguay has been delayed, but will be completed shortly. A consortium, Rutas del Este, is carrying out the work to improve the stretch of Ruta 2 from San Lorenzo to Ypacaraí. The consortium is headed by contractor Sacyr and has been carrying out the work for the PPP deal to upgrade the Ruta 2 and Ruta 7 highways between Ypacarai and Pastoreo.

Portuguese infrastructure operator Infraestruturas de Portugal has awarded Somague a €12.6 million maintenance and refurbishment contract for work on the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril. Somague is heading up a consortium that includes Sociedade de Montagens Metalomecânicas and Reparação, Consolidação e Modificação de Estruturas. A finance source has been secured for major highway projects in Colombia. The Rumichaca-Pasto and Montes de Maria highways are being constructed by Spanish contractor Sacyr. A package of loans worth a total of US$110 million will pay for the highway work. This financing is being supplied jointly by CIFI, Banco BTG Pactual Cayman Branch and Banco Pichincha Panama.

Chile’s capital Santiago now looks set to benefit from a new road tunnel link, which will cost up to US$900 million to construct. The Americo Vespucio Oriente I (AVO I) will stretch 9km through the city and will include a tunnel section. The project has been the focal point for discussions between the local authorities as well as the companies OHL and Sacyr.

Construction work on Chile’s Americo Vespucio Oriente 1 (AVO 1) highway is starting somewhat later than was originally planned. Originally construction of the new highway was to have commenced in September 2016, but this was then held back first to July 2017 and finally to October 2017.

Spanish contractor Sacyr Concesiones will carry out construction of Colombia’s new Cucuta-Pamplona road connection in a deal worth US$485.5 million. This particular road project is of key national importance as it will improve Colombia’s connections with neighbouring Venezuela and Ecuador. The project forms of Colombia’s key 4G road development programme and the package of works was awarded by the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI).

Interest is proving strong in Colombia’s Pamplona-Cucuta 4G motorway project, which is currently undergoing the tender process. The country’s National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has had three bids so far for the project. The 62km stretch of road will be built in Colombia’s Norte de Santander department. The project is expected to cost in excess of US$515 million. So far ANI’s bids have come from CCA Civil Colombia, the Colombia-based subsidiary of Spanish contractor Sacyr, as well as the consortium Estruct
