A fleet of Hitachi short-tailswing excavators have been working on the M3 smart motorway project in the counties of Hampshire and Surrey in England. Eight ZX135US-5 and ZX225USLC-5 excavators owned by Skyland Drainage Contractors, and a further two ZX225USLC-5s owned by Davey Civils, have been employed on the subcontractors’ drainage works. German construction equipment maker Mecalac will manufacture compact articulated wheel loaders to be sold under the Hitachi brand at its factory in Büdelsdorf, Germany. The loaders will comply with EU emissions Stage IIIB, according to a statement from Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe, based in the Netherlands.

The largest wheel loader in the Hitachi range has been delivered to Lasa Marmo’s Whitewater marble quarry near the village of Laas in northern Italy. The new ZW550-5’s main function is to lift each marble block that has been extracted from the cavernous site – situated 1,600m above sea level – and transport it through a series of passageways to an outdoor storage area. Teremat, Hitachi Construction Machinery’s dealer for the Rhône-Alpes, Franche-Comté and parts of Burgundy, has opened an office in Chevigny St Sauveur. It serves the areas of Côte d'Or, Jura, Doubs, Saône et Loire and Haute-Saône. The site includes a 200m² workshop as well as office space for meetings with customers. Two sales members and two technicians were recruited specifically for the site.

Bertha, one of the world’s largest tunnelling machines will resume work underneath the US city of Seattle in November, nearly two years after breaking down. Bertha, at 17.4m diameter, began her journey in July 2013. She was boring a path to relocate a 3.2km stretch of the elevated State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct, built between 1949 and 1953 and which carries around 100,000 vehicles daily. Swiss civil engineering company Scrasa has made a successful investment in a Hitachi ZX470LCH-5 as the main production machine for its sand and gravel pit. The large Zaxis-5 excavator was delivered to Scrasa’s Satigny site on the outskirts of Geneva by the country’s Hitachi dealer, Probst Maveg. The ZX470LCH-5 is part of a fleet of machinery that includes two ZX225USLC-5s, a ZX135US-5 and a ZX85USBLC-5, but it is the only machine based at Satigny. A new Hitachi ZX870LCR-5 owned by Swiss company Lachat is making a significant impact on the production process at the Asuel La Malcôte quarry in the canton of Jura.
