European construction sales grew by 15% in 2017, according to the Annual Economic Report 2018* from the CECE - Committee for European Construction Equipment. After a very strong first quarter, growth slowed down in the second quarter, before taking off again in Q3 and Q4. Current levels of sales are on par with the levels seen in 2006 and 2008, but the industry is still 20% below the 2007 peak.

A Digital Construction seminar is being held in Brussels, Belgium on 22nd February 2018. The event is being co-hosted by the European construction equipment manufacturing association, CECE. Construction equipment body CECE has met with senior figures within the EU Commission to help safeguard the competitiveness of the European industrial base. This is intended to help create jobs and to instil new sustainable economic growth in Europe. Riccardo Viaggi is the new secretary general of CECE. Viaggi is representing the sector for the EU institutions and is managing the association’s Brussels office. Previously, Viaggi has been Secretary General of European Builders Confederation (EBC), a post he held from 2009. Industry confidence – at least for the near future - is supported by performance of the European market, according to the latest CECE Barometer. Stable development at high levels in northern and western Europe underpins a continuing yet slowing recovery in southern Europe and fairly weak growth in Central and Eastern Europe. There are around 350 global OEMs operating in Europe and more than 85% of their worldwide production is done in this region. Half of these 350 OEMs have all their production in Europe.

Automotive original manufacturers, their supply chains and other groups such as Uber and Apple are in the limelight for their attempts to development self-driving vehicles.

Off-highway machines will become the cleanest in the world, according to a new regulation adopted by the European Parliament. The new Regulation tightens emission limits for particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) for mobile machines such construction and quarrying machinery as well as equipment used for municipal and road operation services.
