Rigorous testing for high performance materials
February 9, 2012
Today’s highways require high performance materials, and this means rigorous testing as Patrick Smith reports Highways are under greater pressure than ever today and asphalts have to grant high performances in order to withstand traffic and meet the standards. Studying the plastic permanent deformations in hot mix asphalt (HMA) is very important to obtain useful information for mix designers as an appropriate mix design will reduce the formation of unevenness on road surface. To investigate the effect of mi

'Soft' option gets results
February 8, 2012
Soft engineering techniques, used to prevent soil erosion and stabilise steep cuts and embankments, have allowed engineers to successfully widen the M1 motorway in the UK. Over the 50km length of the work (25km northbound, 25km southbound) on a busy section of the motorway near the city of Nottingham, a total of 48km of slopes had to be modified, split roughly between cutting and embankment. Speedy asphalt repairs
February 8, 2012
Fast and effective asphalt repairs can be made using the new Kasi infrared heating system. The improved machine has an upgraded infrared chamber that allows asphalt repairs of 1.52m2 areas in under 20 minutes and this improved chamber also has a longer life of over 10 years. The new 228mm wide Inconel alloy, heating converter offers a wider infrared heating mesh design and heats asphalt faster, deeper and more evenly. The greater heating coverage can soften existing asphalt to be patched, up to a 76mm depth
