Highways England has today appointed six joint-venture companies to design and build 10 “smart motorways” as part of a €2.1 billion investment. Construction contractors appointed are the Balfour Beatty and VINCI joint venture, a Costain and Galliford Try joint venture, as well as a Carillion and Kier joint venture. Animal welfare groups in the Republic of Ireland are angry over the apparent insensitive act by a road making contractor who painted a yellow line over a dead cat on the side of the highway. A report by Irish newspapers quoted one person saying it was “shameful” and “nobody cared enough to move this poor cat who had been killed by a car and the line was painted over it”.

Amey will handle the contract to manage and maintain the existing Forth Road Bridge and the new Queensferry Crossing. The latter is currently under construction. The contract will commence on the 1st June 2015 and Amey will then take over responsibility for the Forth Road Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1964. The Queensferry Crossing is due to open to traffic in 2016.

Transport Scotland has awarded Amey a six-year contract to maintain and improve the motorways and trunk roads in South East Scotland. The commission, which is valued at over €115.3 million (£90 million), is subject to up to two one-year extensions and will see Amey deliver engineering design and operational delivery services for more than 885km (550 miles) of road. Messages being aired on commercial radio stations across England from 21st October-3rd November consist of a series of three hard-hitting messages to raise awareness among the public of the need to drive safely through roadworks.

Amey has been awarded the €235 million (£200 million) Area 8 contract by the Highways Agency. The contract involves the upgrade and maintenance of major A roads and motorways in parts of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Starting on 1 April 2014, The Asset Support Contract (ASC) is the 5th to be awarded by the agency to date. ASCs have been designed to help the Agency cut road maintenance costs by a quarter by 2015.

Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP) has been announced as preferred bidder for the design, construction, financing and operation of a major infrastructure project to complete the Central Scotland motorway network. The key project will complete the motorway network between Glasgow and Edinburgh by upgrading the A8 trunk road between Baillieston and Newhouse to full motorway standards. Work on the €484.35 million (£415 million) M8, M73 and M74 Motorway Improvements programme, which includes widening sections of each of the motorways, is scheduled to be completed by spring 2017.
