A new concrete surface has been constructed along the busy Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway in Mexico. This route is of prime importance both for Mexico and its neighbour, the US, as it is the main export-import route between the two countries.
Located in northeast Mexico, the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway connects Mexico with the state of Texas in the United States. The route carries 52% of Mexico’s imports and exports and is crucial to the country’s economy, as well as for that of the US.

RSSA new concrete surface has been constructed along the busy Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway in Mexico. This route is of prime importance both for Mexico and its neighbour, the US, as it is the main export-import route between the two countries.
Located in northeast Mexico, the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway connects Mexico with the state of Texas in the United States. The route carries 52% of Mexico’s imports and exports and is crucial to the country’s economy, as well as for that of the US.
3016 CEMEX Mexico contributed to the restoration of the route, which had become severely deteriorated since it was last repaired. The high percentage of heavy trucks using the route had worn out the road surface leaving it in poor condition.
With more than 15,000 truckloads flowing across this highway daily, its repair required durable construction materials that guarantee road safety. The Mexican authorities opted to reconstruct the route with a concrete surface and CEMEX Mexico supplied 98,000m3 of hydraulic concrete to restore a 15.6km stretch of the highway that was in particular need of attention.
This new hydraulic concrete surface has provided a flat, high stiffness-bearing surface that will allow vehicles to travel safely on the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo route. This concrete maintains its stiffness over time and is able to support higher volumes of traffic and loads than other surface types. In addition, concrete paving features high durability and requires minimum maintenance.
CEMEX Mexico was able to resurface the road without stopping traffic during peak periods. Different work shifts were employed to minimise the potential effect on the busy highway and ensure correct placement of the concrete.
This project required the transportation of more than 30,000tonnes of cement over winding sections of highway and directly employed more than 100 people.
