Sudan's safety success

A road safety programme in Sudan has won an achievement award from the International Road Federation.

The IRF has given one of its awards for excellence to the road safety programme in Sudan funded by USAID
A road safety programme in Sudan has won an achievement award from the 713 International Road Federation.

Funded by 1372 USAID, the Sudan Infrastructure Capacity Building Programme won the IRF’s Global Road Achievement Award for Safety. Working in collaboration with USAID and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan, LBG implements the Sudan Infrastructure Services Programme. This supports a range of public infrastructure services and technical assistance. Under the programme, LBG has rebuilt and maintained over 550km of roads and eight bridges ranging from 12-87m long. The infrastructure program has strengthened South Sudan’s economy and is credited with the creation of more than 900 local jobs. A key portion of the programme has been improving road safety in Sudan. USAID, the Ministry of Transport and Roads, and LBG have also developed and implemented a comprehensive approach to public education on road safety. The programme increased public awareness of dangerous driving practices by hosting a road safety week, painting pedestrian crossings and creating public service announcements and billboards. Program staff also ran educational programs for school children, taxi and bus operators, truck drivers and traffic police on road safety and safe driving habits.
