A South Korean contractor is to carry out construction work on a key Qatar project. The contract for the project was awarded by Qatar’s public works authority 2559 Ashghal to 3086 Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C). The package of works is worth some US$730 million in all and is for an extension to Qatar’s E-Ring expressway. The work is needed due to Qatar’s increasing population as well as the growing numbers of vehicles using the road network. The expressway connection will improve transport links for the south of Qatari capital Doha. The scope of works includes extending the expressway by 4.5km as well as adding connecting roads, many of which will have multiple lanes to handle anticipated traffic volumes. Another major part of the project will be to construct three major interchanges, complete with overpasses and connecting ramps. The construction work is expected to take around 42 months to complete. The contractor has been carrying out a $911 million road project in Qatar and hopes to win further transportation deals in the country in the run up to the 2022 World Cup as further infrastructure improvements are required.
