Belgium takes Case Rodeo prizes

Sebastien Pirlet, from Belgium, triumphed in the 2013 Case Rodeo operator competition. An incredible group of skilled operators from 13 countries took part in the European Final, having already won their respective national competitions. This included the competition’s first female Swedish operator, Lise Lott Jansson. All of the competitors attending the event, which was held at the Case Customer Centre at Monthyon near Paris, were put through four tests of ultimate machine control and precision operating.

Isle of Wight road stability scheme ‘first’ at Niton’s Undercliff

John Peck Construction has been awarded the contract to carry out the first major road stability scheme at Niton’s Undercliff on the Isle of Wight, England’s largest island. Wirtgen offers sophisticated concrete paving system

Versatility and high performance are key features of the new SP84i slipform paver from Wirtgen. The machinie runs on four steerable crawler tracks and features its mould fitted between the crawler tracks. With a power output of 180kW, the machine can use electric and hydraulic vibration to pave roadways and surfaces and concrete can be selectively distributed by the spreading plough or spreading auger. Highway to hell?

An enthusiast in the US has built a motorised coffin on wheels, powered by a pulse jet. Its builder, Bob Maddox, has a strong interest in improbable vehicles and built the vehicle using a coffin and a small pulse jet, all mounted on a lightweight chassis and wheels. Weighing just 136kg, his Maddoxjets Coffin Car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in around nine seconds. According to Maddox, he once drove the Coffin Car at 100km/h but was concerned for its stability and wary of attempting to drive it any quicker.

Better excuses needed

A number of British drivers are now counting the cost for their feeble excuses for poor driving. One man was travelling at around 210km/h in his mother’s Mercedes, roughly twice the speed limit for the stretch of road, when he was spotted by police and stopped. When asked in court to explain his reasons for the inappropriate speed, he explained that the vehicle did not have cupholders and was therefore unable to hold his cup of tea. This was why he had to secure it on the seat, between his legs instead.

A driver in Australia was stopped by police the day after he had consumed a large quantity of beer and found to be still two times over the limit for alcohol. Officers commented that the Melbourne resident was in fact lucky to be alive given the quantity of alcohol he had consumed.

Apple’s aviation inaccuracies

Two drivers in Alaska caused some concern to aviation movements by following directions from Apple Maps. The drivers first crossed the taxiway and then the runway at Fairbanks Airport. How they were able to enter the supposedly secure airport however has not been revealed and nor have their IQ ratings. The drivers ignored numerous signposts and painted markings saying that the area they were entering was restricted to aircraft and not for road vehicles.
