Construction work is due to commence for the massive Lower Thames Crossing project in the UK. Costing at least £11 billion, the link will feature dual bore tunnels connecting Kent and Essex, running under the River Thames.
When complete, this will be the longest road tunnel in the UK. The project has been discussed for decades and was originally planned to be a bridge. The tunnel was then considered as being more suitable.
The link is needed owing to the high traffic volumes using the existing Dartford Crossing with its twin tunnels and bridge. The Dartford Crossing is carrying more traffic than it was designed for and delays are frequent. As this is a major transport artery connecting the UK with overseas trade, boosting capacity has been of national importance.
Completion of the Lower Thames Crossing is expected in 2034, joining the A2, A13 and M25.
The project will set engineering precedents as it will be the first to be carried out without diesel powered vehicles allowed on site. Construction machines used for the project will either be electric or fuelled by hydrogen.
