Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has awarded a $389 million road contract to Lane Construction, the US subsidiary of Italian firm Webuild. The work is for a stretch of I-64 in Norfolk, Virginia.
The package of works is for 11km of the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) corridor. The work includes converting the existing three lanes into one part-time, high-occupancy express shoulder lane and three General Purpose (GP) lanes in each direction. It also includes widening and/or rehabilitating nineteen existing bridges along the route.
The project will improve safety, reduce travel times, and ensure smoother traffic flow. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2029. The work will incorporate innovative design solutions to minimise the impact on the travelling public during construction and reduce long-term maintenance needs.
The area around Norfolk, Virginia has seen a steady growth in population along with a considerable gain in traffic volumes. The work to upgrade the capacity of the Hampton Roads Corridor is crucial in providing necessary infrastructure for the area.
