A further $135 million is being invested in road upgrade projects for Ladakh in Northern India. The programme is being managed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The aim is to boost road connectivity in Ladakh, helping to develop the economy of the region as well as ensuring security for the area, which borders with China, Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as being close to Tajikistan. The Project Vijayak to improve Ladakh’s road network was initiated in 2010. So far 1,400km of roads have been built as well as 80 bridge links. Tunnel stretches have also been bored while an important project was the rebuilding of the Zojila Pass, which reaches an altitude of 3,500m.

The use of geotextiles and slope stabilisation has also ensured that many of the new road links and cuttings will be more resistant to the effects of climate change.
