Social and political factors favour the growth of the European construction equipment rental market, but the industry faces a number of challenges, said Gérard Déprez, president of leading rental company Loxam speaking at the Intermat Rental Day conference. Growing awareness that the shared economy brings cost and environmental advantages through more intensive and judicious use of equipment, together with a drive towards more mechanisation is increasing the demand for rental.

Paris-based construction and civils equipment rental firm Loxam has taken a 25% stake in Brazilian rental equipment business Degraus. Degraus, formed in 1987, is one of the South American country’s top five rental outfits, with a strong presence in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador and Porto Alere.

Auction operation IronPlanet says that 2014 has proved to be a strong year for its business development. The company has grown significantly since it began as an idea in a Harvard Business School working group, which suggested an online auction business to buy and sell machines. And six years from its move to expand into EMEA, the company says it has sold over US$ 3 billion worth of used equipment worldwide.

Attendees to INTERMAT will see demolition machines in action, thanks to international equipment rental group Loxam. Loxam is based in France and opened its first international branch in Switzerland in 1996. It now operates throughout Europe and, since 2010, has had an operation in Morocco.
