The agreement between Ghana and China over a road construction project has been settled. The deal will see Ghana effectively trading bauxite from a mining operation with a Chinese firm, which will build road links in the West African nation. The deal is called the Sinohydro Bauxite Barter Arrangement and has been set up with Ghana’s Government. A Chinese contractor, Sinohydro, is now commencing a major highway project in Bolivia.

Work is starting on an upgrade for a 100km stretch of road in Zambia. The route connects Nchelenge and Chiengi districts and will benefit from a new asphalt surface. The project is costing US$77 million and is being carried out by the contractor Sinohydro Zambia. Delays to the work have been caused by heavy rains however. The Zambian Government has paid an initial $3.8 million for the work to be carried out and the project is expected to take two years to complete.

Delays have hit the construction of two new highway projects in Macedonia. Funding for the projects has been provided through a loan package from China worth €574 million.

Serbian prime minister Aleksandar Vucic said that part of the future Pozega-Boljare motorway towards Montenegro could be let under a concession to China. Meanwhile, Serbian minister of construction and infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic, has said that around €9 billion of all types of infrastructure projects are underway. A Chinese contractor will carry out a major highway project in Bolivia. The company, Sinohydro, will construct a new road section close to El Sillar and the work will form part of the highway connecting Santa Cruz with Cochabamba. The work for the 28km stretch of road is costing around US$450 million to carry out and the link is due to open to traffic in 2019.
