The historic city of Canterbury in Kent, England is benefiting from road upgrade work worth £61 million. The project is being headed by VolkerFitzpatrick.
A new link will connect the existing A28 and A291 roads and the project is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area. The historic city grew from a settlement predating the UK’s Roman development 2,000 years ago and its preserved medieval centre is famed for its historical importance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But traffic issues are a major headache for residents in the area. The project is called the Sturry Road Link scheme. Construction work commenced in April 2026, with the work being carried out for Kent County Council.
Homes England provided a substantial portion of the necessary funding for the work as part of a plan to develop new housing in the area. However, the project does face some technical challenges in that the water table is high in the location.
