The Mariani Viaduct on the SS76 route in Italy has reopened to traffic as part of the Marche–Umbria Quadrilateral road network project. This is being delivered by Webuild on behalf of ANAS (FS Italiane Group). The southbound roadway is open to traffic, with one of its lanes accessible to vehicles. This removes a bottleneck along the Perugia–Ancona corridor, reducing detours and delays that have affected traffic flows between the inland areas and the coast in recent years.
The 2.2km section had been closed since 2018. Its reopening improves traffic flow and eases pressure on local roads that had been used as alternative routes during the closure. The work required environmental assessments, remediation activities and design updates. Work resumed at the end of 2025 thanks to coordination among institutions and technical stakeholders, including the Marche Region, ARPAM, AST, Quadrilatero, ANAS and the Municipality of Genga.
The work involved widening the viaduct by building a new pier and abutment, as well as installing a new span of approximately 30m. The 572m Sassi Rossi 2 tunnel and 141m Sassi Rossi 1 tunnel were also upgraded to meet current standards. Traffic on the viaduct is running in one lane in either direction, while work continues on the overpass lanes. This allows work to be completed while keeping the road open, ensuring safety for drivers and workers.
Maxi Lot 2 includes work on the SS318 and SS76 corridors (Fossato di Vico–Cancelli section) as well as the first two phases of the Pedemontana della Marche. Completion of the phases will deliver a direct connection between Umbria and Marche. Drivers will be able to travel more quickly and without detours between Perugia and the Adriatic coast.
The project involves building a 67km network of tunnels, viaducts and interchanges, improving accessibility, safety and connectivity across the central Apennines.
