Nepal’s capital will see improved traffic flow and less congestion with the new Gwarko Flyover now being open to vehicles. The Nepalese Government’s Department of Roads has completed work on the Gwarko Flyover, which has now been opened officially by prime minister KP Sharma Oli.

The Gwarko Flyover features two lanes in either direction and forms part of the Kathmandu Ring Road, a key project helping to reduce the city’s chronic traffic congestion. The project was offered to international tender four years ago, with the work being awarded to three Nepalese firms and then planned, designed and built under a joint venture partnership.

This flyover is part of the Kathmandu Ring Road at Gwarko Chowk and will address to reduce the traffic congestion in the intersection. The new link allows the Gwarko Intersection to benefit from an uninterrupted flow of traffic along the ring road as well as regulated traffic flow along the auxiliary road intersecting the ring road.

The Kathmandu Ring Road is an eight-lane road circling around the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur. The total length of Ring Road is 27km. The road connects key areas including Kalanki, Satdobato, Gwarko, Balkumari, Koteswor, Tinkune, Tribhuwan International Airport, Gaushala, Chabahil, Sukedhara, Maharajgunj, Bashundhara, Samakhusi, Gongabu, Balaju and Swayambhunath. The project envisaged improvement of Gwarko Intersection fed by arterial road plying traffic from Mangal bazar to Imadol.
