Construction work is now well underway for the important Zoji La Tunnel project in North India, replacing a treacherous mountain pass known for many catastrophic crashes. The tunnel will stretch over 13km when complete, featuring a single bore that carries traffic in both directions. It is thought to be the longest single tube road tunnel in the world carrying traffic in either direction.
The tunnel will replace the Zoji La Pass, which is notoriously dangerous and is blocked frequently during periods of bad weather as well as by rockfalls and landslips. Crashes are not uncommon on the Zoji La Pass and are sometimes catastrophic, with multiple fatalities. The new tunnel will provide a much safer route for transport and help develop the region.
The project is being carried out by Megha Engineering & Infrastructure (MEIL) at an altitude of over 3,500m, which is presenting technical challenges. The performance of construction machines is restricted typically by extremes of altitude, with engine power and cooling efficiency being reduced.
The tunnel will link Baltal near Sonamarg with Meenamarg in the Drass-Kargil region.
