A new deadline has been set for the delayed Senegal-Mauritania Bridge project. Construction of the bridge is costing nearly €88 million, which is being carried out jointly by the Senegal Government and Mauritania Government.

The government of both nations were disappointed with the progress of the project, which was just 30% complete at the start of 2025. The Senegal Ministry of Infrastructure and Mauritanian Ministry of Transport have been discussing the completion date with the contractor.

Work started on the bridge in late 2021 and it was originally due to be complete in a 30 month period. However, the project should be finished by the end of 2026 according to the authorities from Senegal and Mauritania. Spanning the Senegal River, the bridge will measure nearly 1.5km in length when complete.

The funding for the work has been supplied jointly by the African Development Bank, the European Union, the European Investment bank and the Senegal Government and Mauritania Government. The project will boost trade and transport between the two nations once complete. It will provide a key economic boost for both countries. The project is one of several for the region aimed at boosting connectivity, with other works underway between Algeria and Mauritania.
