Cameroon is planning a massive programme of road upgrades worth up to $1.6 billion. The programme is being planned by the Ministry of Public Works, with a view to extending the 18,157km network of primary roads. Much of the road improvement, widening and maintenance work will be carried out in and around the capital, Yaounde, as well as the country’s second (and largest) city, Douala.
Work is already underway for stage 2 of the upgrade to the N3 highway linking Yaounde and Douala. This project is being carried out in vicinity of the town of Pouma and is expected to take three years, with one component being the construction of a 31km connecting road.
The country has handled major expansion work for its total road network. At the end of 2024, the network extended 121,873km of which 10,575km is paved. The country’s paved road network has continued to grow.
