The new Unionport Bridge spanning Westchester Creek in the Bronx in New York City has been completed. This new bascule bridge replaces an earlier bascule bridge dating from the 1950s.
The $232 million Unionport Bridge carries the Bruckner Expressway and provides an important connection for drivers in New York City. This new bridge features two side-by-side, single-leaf bascule spans, each supporting three lanes of traffic. It also has a dedicated pedestrian walkway and protected bike lane. Efficient operation is ensured due to the advanced mechanical and electrical systems for rapid bridge lifts and safe marine navigation.
The Unionport Bridge connects key arteries such as the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway, and Hutchinson River Parkway. The bridge has been designed for a 75-year service life. Construction was managed in phases to keep open road and maritime traffic, meeting New York City Department of Transportation’s goals for safety, durability, and community impact. US Webuild subsidiary Lane Construction and its partner, Schiavone Construction Co, now SPC Construction Co, led the project, coordinating complex marine, structural and traffic management operations.
