Tanzania has set a budget of $2.3 billion to develop its road network. The work will be managed by the Tanzania Roads Agency (TANROADS) and involves carrying out 79 road and bridge projects.

The country has been investing heavily in developing its road links and has built eight bridges in the last five years. At the end of 2025 Tanzania had grown its total road network to over 182,140km. Work has been carried out to 5,770km of roads, with feasibility studies and designs prepared for work to a further 2,053km of roads and bridges.

Meanwhile, 43km of roads are benefiting from resurfacing and maintenance in Kigamboni on the east side of Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, also the largest in East Africa with its 7 million population. This is part of the $42.65 million second phase of the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP II). Work will be carried out in Mjimwema, Kibada, Kigamboni, Vijibweni and Somangila to improve transport for the municipality.

So far nearly $38 million has been invested in the DMDP II in Temeke Municipality. This has benefited over 166km of roads, which have been resurfaced in three constituencies, Mbagala, Chamazi and Temeke. The work has been managed by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA).

Dar es Salaam is also benefiting from the new Jangwani Bridge, costing $35 million. The bridge is being built by the Chinese firm, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), which was awarded the contract by TANROADS and will take 24 months to complete. The bridge will boost traffic flow for Dar es Salaam, carrying the Morogoro Road over the Jangwani Flood Plain, which suffers flooding during the rainy season. The construction of the bridge forms part of the  Msimbazi Valley Development Project, which is benefiting from $200 million of funding being supplied by the World Bank. Other works include the construction of the Igogo Bridge and Mkwajuni Bridge as well as additional culverts and drainage measures to handle floodwaters. The Msimbazi Valley Development Project will improve infrastructure from the centre of the city out to the North West of the city.
