Malawi is to benefit from a major programme of road improvements. The plans are being drawn up by the country’s Roads Authority (RA), with $141 million of upgrade work due.
One of the biggest projects will be surfacing work for the Golomoti-Chantulo stretch of the M10 Road, which is expected to cost $85.7 million, around 61% of the entire budget. The work has been split into two and Unik Construction Engineering Limited is carrying out the first stretch, while Mota-Engil Africa is handling the second stretch.
The remaining funds will be spent on improvements to the M1 Road between Bunda Turn-off and Kameza Roundabout. Amongst the work being carried out will be improved drainage and pothole repairs.
However, there are concerns about the poor state of Malawi’s roads with newly constructed links already showing serious sigs of deterioration. High road wear is a major issue in the country, suggesting that insufficient maintenance and unsuitable construction methods may play key roles.
