The world’s worst cities for traffic congestion have been ranked.

The results of a European traffic study should surprise few UK drivers. According to the research by Inrix, the UK has Europe’s most congested roads. The study evaluated traffic densities in 123 major cities across Europe and revealed 20,375 areas in the UK where traffic congestion is a problem. A report by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute on traffic congestion in the US has revealed key data on increasing traffic volumes. Traffic jams in the UK are costing the country's 8.2 million drivers US$683.31 million (£426mn) a year in wasted fuel, according to an estimate in a report by the analytics firm Inrix. The cost, which equates to £52 a vehicle, is on top of an estimated wasted driver time cost of £2.7bn. Out of the traffic on the country's roads during the day Inrix states that 19% is freight, with business vehicles passing on £1.1 billion of costs every year to consumers in order to cover the cost of them waiting in traffic

Inrix will collaborate with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODoT) to use the company’s traffic information and cloud-based analytics to further the state’s goal of clearing roads statewide within three hours after major storms.

Research has revealed that traffic congestion in Belgium is worse than in other parts of Europe and North America. The ranking covers all North American and European countries. The study shows that Belgian capital Brussels and the Belgian city of Antwerp have severe congestion problems. Milan in northern Italy is the other European city suffering severe traffic congestion according to the research. In Brussels and Antwerp drivers face an average annual loss of 72 and 71 hours, respectively, in traffic jams.

Inrix, a leading international provider of traffic information and intelligent driver services, has released its fifth Annual Inrix Traffic Scorecard revealing a startling 30% drop in traffic congestion in the US in 2011. In the report, which also scores Europe, 70 of America’s top 100 most populated cities showed decreases in traffic congestion last year. The report concludes these results are indicative of a ‘stop-’n’-go economy’ where lack of employment combined with high fuel prices is keeping Americans

Inrix has introduced what it claims is the industry's first cloud-based data analytics services designed to improve how transportation agencies monitor, manage and measure the performance of their road networks. "Now more than ever, government agencies worldwide are being required to stretch and justify every dollar invested in transportation - being asked to do more with less," said Rick Schuman, Inrix VP of public sector.

The I-95 Corridor Coalition, the University of Maryland and Inrix have announced a three-year extension and expansion of the I-95 Coalition Vehicle Probe Project (VPP), operational since 2008, that uses crowd-sourced traffic data and advanced analytics techniques to turn billions of data points into insights that are transforming the manner in which member states build, manage and measure their road networks.
