Goodyear Tyre and Rubber is looking to demonstrate its commitment to the construction industry by launching a range of tyres for earthmoving applications, which aims to boost productivity and reduce operating costs.

Goodyear has unveiled robust tyres for port machinery and introduced new sizes of its wheeled loader tyres. It has also launched a tyre management system to help improving total cost of ownership. For port applications, the EV-4C and EV-4R are both size 18.00R25 and are particularly suited for container handling machines and straddle carriers, says the company. The EV-4C tyre has a deep tread design for use in wet conditions and to increase tyre life while reducing total cost of ownership.

Goodyear has developed the RL-4D tyre range in response to customer demand for a harsh floor tyre in underground mining. A hybrid mix of the GP4-D and the firm’s RL5K tyre, the RL-4D is suitable for articulated dump trucks and wheeled loaders. Initially the tyre has been launched in an 875/65R29 size, but the company could develop additional sizes if there is demand.

Goodyear’s new wheeled loader tyre for heavy applications, the RT-5D, is said to offer 25% more carrying capacity, greater comfort and more powerful traction compared to its predecessor. The claim is based on internal assessment at the Goodyear Innovation Centre Luxembourg 2012 in comparison with the RT-5C (tested size, 29.5R25).

The new Hi-Stability technology featured in the latest range of Goodyear tyres is said to increase load capacity in off-road applications by up to 25%. The new tyres have been developed to match the power, speed and torque of the industry’s latest machines. Hi-Stability tyres allow higher inflation pressures, increasing the load capacity of the machines to which they are fitted – it is the air that carries the load. Renault Trucks’ Tridem 8x4*4 is designed for carrying heavy loads in restricted spaces and is also suitable for mounting mobile cranes or vacuum units. Based on a lightweight Lander 6x4 chassis, the Tridem has an additional 10tonne rated rear steering tag axle giving it a turning circle some 10 to 15% tighter than a traditional 8x4 (depending on the wheelbase). Once back on the road the driver can, depending on the load being carried, raise the rear axle to increase fuel economy.

Aggressive driving by one person behind the wheel can result in others following suit. That is the conclusion of a new study carried out by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and tyre manufacturer Goodyear. The conclusion of the research reveals that when one driver behaves aggressively, others will respond with similar behaviour. The study was carried out in 15 separate countries and included close to 9,000 drivers.
